Define the word:  Monster.  Why does Shelley refer to Victor's creation as "creature" or "creation"? Who is responsible for naming him "monster"?  What do you think that means?  Who, in your assessment is the real "monster"?  Defend your answer.

Frankenstein Ch 16-24

Discuss the IRONY in Victor's statement to the magistrate: "Man, how ignorant art thou in thy pride of wisdom!"

Frankenstein Ch 16-24

What role does Elizabeth play?  Does her death alter or perpetuate that role?  In what way?

Discuss the role of Elizabeth in the story.  What is Shelley's purpose in creating such a character?

Frankenstein Ch 16-24

Frankenstein Ch 16-24

After watching the destruction of his female companion, the creature makes an eloquent defense and vows Victor will "repent of the injuries [he] inflicts."  Is the creature justified in his feelings?  Why or why not?  What is Shelley's purpose in illustrating this defense?

Frankenstein Ch 9-15

How does the change in narration to the creature's point of view affect the reading of the novel?  How do you feel toward the creature?  Toward Victor?  How do you account for these views?

Frankenstein Ch 9-15

"The desert mountains and dreary glaciers are my refuge.  I have wandered here many days, the caves of ice, which I only do not fear, are a dwelling to me, and the only one which man does not grudge...If the multitude of mankind knew of my existence, they would do as you do, and arm themselves for my destruction...I am miserable, and they shall share in my wretchedness" (Shelley 89-90).

What is happening here?  How would you describe Shelley's tone?  (Again, another reference to nature--what is the author suggesting about the power of nature?)

Frankenstein Ch 9-15

What is Victor's reaction toward the Valley of Chamounix?  How is this a departure from his previous views of nature?  What commentary might Shelley be making here?

Frankenstein Ch 9-15

Man, Nature, God and Society
If you don't know these views, do some investigating.  How do you see these views presented in the novel?  What patterns are clearly beginning to emerge?

Frankenstein Ch 9-15

How does Victor's guilt affect his health?  What is Shelley's purpose in this recurring plot device?

Frankenstein Ch. 1-8

Frankenstein Ch. 1-8

Hey you guys, here are some questions I thought were interesting.

 1.  The subtitle of Frankenstein is "The Modern Prometheus."  Who is Prometheus?  What happened to him?  How might this relate to the novel?
